What Is Woodcutting?

Woodcutting is the fourth gathering discipline — alongside Salvaging, Bioforaging, and Signal Tapping. Instead of mining deposits, you fell the mutant trees that have grown through Architect ruins and irradiated soil. Each tree yields timber, the core resource consumed by the Pyrecraft discipline.

Tree Tiers

Ten tiers of mutant timber grow across The Wastes, from the soft Sporeshelf fungal-wood found near the crash site to the impossibly dense Genesis Timber deep in the endgame zones. Low-tier trees are plentiful and easy to harvest. Higher-tier trees require greater Woodcutting skill — you will need to train extensively before you can fell the ancient growth in the deepest regions.

Level Requirements

Woodcutting follows the same progression curve as the other gathering skills. Beginners start with the lowest-tier trees and gradually unlock access to rarer species as their skill improves. The most valuable timber is reserved for seasoned woodcutters who have spent significant time honing their craft.

What Timber Is For

Timber has a single destination: the campfire. The Pyrecraft discipline burns timber to produce powerful environmental effects that aid exploration, gathering, and combat survival. Higher-tier timber fuels stronger and longer-lasting burns. If you plan to use Pyrecraft, keep your Woodcutting level progressing alongside it.
