Eight Tiers

All equipment belongs to one of eight tiers, named after the ore used to forge them. Higher tier always means stronger gear. No ambiguity. Tier 1 Tin gear from the Sporeveld, Tier 2 Copper from the Miasma Flats, Tier 3 Iron from the Resonance Caves, Tier 4 Steel from the Crucible, Tier 5 Titanium from the Pale Reaches, Tier 6 Cobalite from the Shattered Expanse, Tier 7 Xenosteel from the Abyssal Veins, and Tier 8 Neutronium from the Signal Apex.

Deterministic Stats

Every tiered item has fixed stats. A Steel Helm always has the same armor and bonuses. No random rolls, no variance. Same name, same stats, every time. The only way to push an item beyond its base power is through Enhancement.

Where Gear Drops

Enemies in each zone drop that zone's tier of equipment. Elite and uber enemies have a small chance of dropping gear one tier higher. Merchants stock their zone's tier plus the previous tier. Salvage crates contain gear from a range of tiers depending on the crate quality and your roll.

Boss Trophies

Boss kills, tower milestones, and natural 20 crate rolls drop named trophy gear. Uniquely-styled tier items with above-curve stats and a story behind the name. They still slot into the regular tier ladder, so a T3 boss trophy is a great find at the Resonance Caves but eventually outclassed by T5+ gear. They are never sold by merchants and never drop from regular enemies.
